Managed decline

You'd think that life with Roundel would be a bit like one of those old films about The Monkees or The Beatles. We're all co-habiting in perfect harmony with Charlie working the door, Jim the Caretaker repairing everything that Justin has walloped and Loins prancing around like that stupid jester from rentaghost.

In reality we aren't quite that entertaining unless someone is running a Roundel dead pool. Jim has hurt his foot (tripped over wallet), Charlie's Campervan has seized up alongisde Justin's hip - both casualties due to age and over-use, and Loins has undergone cosmetic surgery to turn that frown from grey to brown. It cost half a crown.

If we were horses we'd all be at the Bostik factory by now and the van would have been laughed out of various scrapyards but, in the face of all this adversity, we soldier on. Giddy with the Christmas talk that has been forced upon us since August we will be gracing the stage at The Ainsty York this weekend. Assuming it has a stage. Following that we will relax back into our usual comfortable routine much like we do into our recliner riser chairs back at Roundel assisted living.

There was a bit of talk about new outfits and upgrading some of our gear but that seems to have fizzled out like a damp firework so anyone hoping to see Jim in front of a wall of speaker cabs will have to supply their own. His unwashed suit will still be sporting its usual DNA soup however.

This could have been summed up with a simple statement like more of the same next year but where's the fun in that? Nobody reads this anyway.

See you soon friends.

New improved Roundel

It's all change at Castle Roundel.

Since 2005 we have played around 500 gigs all over the UK to a largely positive reception. Except in Shildon - they really didn't like us at all. It always adds to our despondancy when a crowd refuse to acknowledge the band then applaud the jukebox as we're packing up. I guess that you can't win them all eh?

In the last couple of years our performance has been consistently good too. Partly due to our long apprenticeship but mainly because we have graduated to playing better venues with more appreciative audiences. This combination always makes for a better show and everyone is happy. Even Loins.

This has also thrown up a problem (albeit a nice one) in that we find ourselves very much in demand. Bookings for the next year usually start in July and finish in October so we have to disappoint many venues.

So, we have decided to tidy up our image and improve our game. The music will retain its usual core of Jam, Who, Kinks etc. but will stick more rigidly to the Mod formula alongside the visual aspect of the band with era correct clothes and stage equipment. We will also be focusing on a slicker and better presented show.

The idea behind all of this is that we would like to play better quality venues that are more comfortable and suitable both for us and our audience. We want each show to be more of an event - properly presented & looking and sounding great. This may well result in a downturn in corner-of-the-pub gigs but we believe that it's the way forward as a worrying amount of these smaller venues have disappeared of late.

Our plan is to try the new formula in 2019 and see how it pans out so please be patient with us. If the Roundel experience suffers we promise that we will revert to our previous incarnation ASAP

So what do you think dear friends?

New Venue in Darlington

We have a new venue in Darlington in which to entertain you, come and join us at The George in Darlington. We hope to see lots of you there!

Busy Summer

We have a busy few weeks ahead of us and we are thouroughly enjoying ourselves, last weekend we played at The Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Strensall and had a great night, followed by a similarly fantastic evening at The Golden Lion in Helperby.

Justin has decided that the other two drum kits he has just weren't loud enough, so he bought yet another.... Bigger....and yes, louder... He may have had 12 years off from drumming but he is detemined to make up for it!

Keep an eye on our Gigs, we have a few new venues coming up, in particular we dont seem to play the North East enough so we have a new venue for August Bank Holiday Monday, Aspire in Darlington!

We are ready to shake their rafters, hope to see you there

Normanby

Hi Roundel Fans,

Due to diary confusion with The Normanby, unfortunately we won't be appearing there this coming Friday (May 3rd 2013).

Normal service will resume thereafter :-)

Gigs.....

Another one bites the dust..... Following cancellation of Harrogate gig we also sadly have to report that the forthcoming Station Hotel gig in Northallerton has also cancelled ... Maybe they didnt realise we would pack the place out with hometown fans.... Onwards and upwards, we really want to have at least 2 Northallerton gigs a year, if you know of any venues \ pubs that want to host a Roundel appearance please ask them to email us.

Meanwhile, all other gigs are on, Helperby on Sunday 10th of March (bring you Mum) and a new venue, The Bridge Hotel in Catterick on Friday 22nd March. £4 entry but a free drink! What more could you ask for?

See you soon

Happy New Era!

Well, that's Christmas over and done with. In a pathetic attempt to avoid the inevitable expenditure, Jim has taken to his bed with some imaginary illness...

The rest of us have soldiered on and come through the season unscathed. Loins has made a vain attempt to return his Christmas tree on the 26th December, citing excessive needle fall... Worth a try Ebenezeer...

We had our inaugural Gig with our new drummer, Justin, on 22nd December and what a great night it was, a whole new era has started and we are looking forward to a great 2013. Hopefully you will all be part of it!

Justin is over the moon to be in Roundel..... He'll soon be queuing up to be let back into the asylum....

We cried ourselves to sleep..
So, there you go. End of an era, we have lost our own little Dobbie, our special Elf, the diplomatic vertically challenged timekeeper has left the building. I suppose it could be worse... he could be due some severance pay..... Raise a glass to Dob, the best you can get ! Check out the photos of his last Gig.... All the best mate, don't go mad on that Toblerone.... No one likes a fat Elf ....... Love, the remaining Roundellos x
Farewell to Dob

As lots of you will already know, we are losing our drummer Dob as he ventures abroad for a career in Switzerland (they have ran out of cuckoos and he has secured a lucrative deal in a clock).

We are really going to miss him, he has been our short yet faithful and affectionate (think King Charles Spaniel) drummer since the start of the band and it will be like losing a leg, a short withered and near usless leg, but a leg nonetheless....

We wish him all the best and are determined to give him a good send off, his one concern was how high the light switches are in Switzerland but his fears have been allayed with his employers giving him a pair of company stilts....

The King is Dead........

Long live The King.....

We can  also announce the arrival of a full size drummer in the form of Justin Howe, a man who is determined to continue to make Roundel as great as ever. As a new member it seems unfair to insult him... Tall he may be, but he is no looker....

Our diary is filling up nicely for 2013 and we have high hopes for a great year, come and be part of it

As Jim would say, 'Let's make a memory'... (he's been to Disneyland, he was researching his family tree)

If you ever wonder who writes these missives I'll give you a clue by insulting the guitarist.... Loins is Bald (unimaginative, but the truth hurts)

Thanks to Bramham

We had a great night on Saturday playing to a lovely crowd at Bramham, thanks very much for having us, we'd love to come back. Big thanks to Keith for sorting it and doing the sound engineering, we were supported by a great group of lads, Albion, who set the bar high for us, they were no mean feat to follow, we are sure we will all hear more from them in the future!

Alne Street Fayre

Thanks to Alne Street Fayre for having us again, a great afternoon with no rain!!

Take a look at our videos page for our latest member joining us to play (and shame us)......

Roll on the 2013 Street Fayre.....

**Gig Cancellation*

Hi

Sorry to disappoint, but due to refurbishments (of the venue not the band!), Roundel won't be playng the Stone Roses Bar in York on the 15th June. Normal service will resume therafter :-)

Spring has sprung

There you go, blinked and a quarter of the year has gone! We've had some great gigs so far this year, plenty more lined up but we can always squeeze a few more in. If you are looking for a great band to entertain you, drop us an email if you'd like us to play your party, wedding, funeral (ok, maybe not the funeral).

We have managed a rehearsal this year, now that may not sound much of an achievement but believe us it is! Trying to get four grown men (obviously Charlie and Dob aren't quite fully grown) in the same place at the same time is no mean feat..... so hopefully there will be a few new additions to our repertoire soon.... keep an eye on the set list page for more details.

That's it for now, catch you at a gig soon..... If you really want to make three of us smile, ask Dob if you can have a go on his drums.... He just loves that.....

Here we go again....

We kicked off 2012 with a gig in O'Neills in York last Friday, as usual the audience didn't disappoint us and we had a great time. Jim got a new admirer, Dob had ladies queuing up to have a look at his (nonexistent) legs and Loins was doing some great Father Jack impressions. I on the other hand was more like Father Dougal..... Shall I press that button Ted?

We are looking forward to a great year, lots of gigs (assuming Jim doesnt take any more holidays) and good times ahead.

Charlie x

****Stop press***

Stepping into the breach to fill a cancellation, Roundel are delighted to be playing at The Magdalens, Ripon on 2nd December.

See you there!

Gig cancellation

Sorry to disappoint all those planning to come and see us at The Horseshoe in Easingwold on the 2nd December. Unfortunately The Horseshoe has cancelled the Gig.

2012

2011 has been another good year for us and 2012 is shaping up to be just as good, our diary is almost full for next year.

Jim has insisted that we buy some new lights. The rest of us didnt really see the need but went along with his spending compulsion. ..... no closure there Jim!

If you want to book us for any gigs we suggest you contact us as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.

We hope to  keep adding to our repertoire so if you have any requests or suggestions please let us know!

Hope to see you at a gig soon!

Al and Sandie's Wedding

Just thought we'd share a thankyou from the newlyweds...

Hi Charlie.

Just a note to say a big thank you for your performance at the
weekend.

The feedback we got from our guests was brilliant.

Everyone enjoyed the music. Not one person was unhappy.

Please thank the lads for us for an incredible job and may Roundel go
from strength to strength.

All the best, Al & Sandie

Now everyone enjoys praise....

Congratulations to Al and Sandie!

Aged Guitarist...

Last week we played at Loins's (our wonderful guitarist) 40th Birthday bash and had a great night!

We welcomed Jaggers back on stage for a song to reunite the original Roundel Line Up. Now that bloke can dance!

In an attempt to emulate his routine Charlie has been provided with some itching powder, if that doesnt work then the use of electricity has been suggested - some dodgy Tens machine Loins got off ebay...

So that's all of us in our 40's, some of us looking like we are in our Fifties and one of us still peering quizzically over the top of a drum kit wondering what time it is and why he is here...

We have some great gigs lined up, come and see the spectacle for yourself!
